Amused, bemused, confused (or somewhere in between) by ...

the amazing things kids build with scraps and garbage they collect
the seemingly endless utility of newspaper and plastic bags
seeing girls/women curtsy
stalk of sugar cane = common snack
being greeted by name everytime I go to the post office
emergency brake = big rock(s) stuck behind the wheel(s)
short-sleeved suit coats
home-made yogurt!
the things that can be made with just flour and water
all the types of pop that aren't (but should be!) sold in the US
small children with even smaller children strapped to their backs
women balancing anything & everything on their heads
spending more than $1 on a meal now feels extravagant
shouts of "mzungu! mzungu!" following me down the street
being super self-conscious about my knees (while wearing running shorts)
knowing less about American hiphop/rap than every person my age or younger I've met in Tanzania
Everbright: "Kat, do wazungu eat cats/dogs/children?"
being a constant source of amusement
cooked bananas tasting like potatoes
the groundskeepers watering the dirt more than the grass (part of the losing battle against the dust)
purple toilet paper
