South Sudan has been getting some rare and much appreciated international media coverage lately. In celebration of this, and since this blog has scandalously neglected any discussion of the political situation (and because its 8.30pm and I am still at work. AGAIN) I have decided to compile some of these for you along with my thoughts on them rather than subjecting you to a lengthy diatribe.
This is an interesting analysis of the possible outcomes
This is good coverage (as always on South Sudan from the FT)
This makes me love Slovakia a little bit
This is worrying
This is really worrying
This is the place to go for some incredible photos of people and places in South Sudan (he's the fiancée of a colleague of mine and I love his pictures)
This is a relief
This is sensationalist, unhelpful, frankly irresponsible nonsense from someone who should know better.
This is the first incidence of referendum related unrest/violence in Khartoum (and unlikely to be the last)
And this is no doubt well meaning but the analogy is useless, the description of the conflict is simplistic to the point of being offensive and the last paragraph is just self-glorifying nonsense.
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” - Mark Twain

News Round-Up
Southern Sudan and its upcoming referendum have been getting quite a bit of attention from the press lately, and my friend Sophie had the excellent idea of putting together a compilation of stories for her blog, Sophie in Sudan. I couldn’t agree more with her thoughts on these pieces, so rather than reinvent the wheel myself I thought I’d share her post with you.
